Spain is a country on the Iberian Peninsula sharing land borders with Portugal, Gibraltar & France.
The Spanish constitution declares the rights of "regions and nationalities" to self-government and claims the "indissoluble unity of the Spanish nation". To this end the country is divided up into seventeen Autonomous Communities (Comunidad Autonoma). These are:
Andalucia, Aragon, Asturias, Balearic Islands, Basque Country, Canary Islands, Cantabria, Castilla-La Mancha, Castilla y Leon, Cataluna, Extremadura, Galicia, Comunidad de Madrid, Murcia, Navarra La Rioja, and Valencia.
As can be seen from this list, some are continental, and occupy most of the Iberian Peninsula, while two of them are islands, the Balearics, in the Mediterranean Sea, and the Canary Islands in the Atlantic Ocean. In addition to these 17 autonomous regions there are also two small Spanish towns in North Africa, the cities of Ceuta and Melilla.
